Position Overview:
This role is a part of the Verra Command Center team or VCC, which is responsible for remote technical support and oversight of roadside monitoring and enforcement implementations across the United States and parts of Canada. VCC is a 24-hour 7 day a week operation that works to ensure enforcement sites are up, operating, and working for our government clients. We work to provide fast and reliable troubleshooting and monitoring for all devices that fall into our scope.The Network Operations Engineer is a key technical member of the VCC Infrastructure team, focused on maintaining and optimizing the performance, reliability, and scalability of network systems that connect and support roadside operations. This role emphasizes proactive network monitoring, configuration management, and automation to minimize downtime and enhance overall connectivity across thousands of remote field devices.
The Network Operations Engineer collaborates closely with Operations Technicians, Supervisors, Network Infrastructure teams, and Verra Engineering to ensure that network health directly supports operational performance and client SLAs. This position plays a critical role in enabling the VCC to achieve service excellence by enhancing Network Operations, enhancing system monitoring, and ensuring that roadside products and platforms operate at peak performance.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Manage and optimize network monitoring systems (e.g.,What's up Gold, SolarWinds, or similar) to ensure visibility and alerting for all roadside network components.
- Proactively identify and resolve network performance issues, latency, and outages impacting enforcement sites.
- Monitor VPNs, cellular modems, routers, and firewalls to ensure stable, secure, and efficient communication between field and cloud systems.
- Handle escalations to cellular network carriers for roadside network issues, including outage coordination, SIM provisioning, and connectivity resolution.
- Lead advanced troubleshooting efforts for network connectivity, routing, and configuration issues impacting roadside operations.
- Build, configure, and maintain VPN tunnels and FortiGate firewalls, ensuring secure and reliable network communication.
- Provide Tier 3 escalation support for complex network-related incidents and collaborate with Infrastructure and Field Engineering teams to drive permanent resolutions.
- Participate in on-call rotation to support 24x7 network uptime and service continuity.
- Develop and maintain automation tools and scripts (Python, PowerShell, Bash, etc.) to streamline network device configuration, monitoring, and diagnostics.
- Enhance SNMP, API, and logging integrations to improve real-time network visibility and reduce manual intervention.
- Support configuration, deployment, and lifecycle management of network devices including routers, switches, firewalls, and cellular gateways.
- Partner with Network Infrastructure teams to implement changes, perform upgrades, and optimize routing and redundancy for improved uptime.
- Work directly with Lead, Senior, and Operations Technicians to translate frontline network issues into scalable engineering improvements.
- Collaborate with Systems, Cloud, IT, and Software teams to ensure end-to-end operational readiness and performance of connected systems.
- Create and maintain detailed network documentation, topology diagrams, and runbooks.
- Develop training materials to ensure VCC teams understand network dependencies and troubleshooting processes.
- Participate in network modernization projects and contribute to technology evaluations that improve network efficiency, reliability, and scalability.
- Identify and implement opportunities to enhance network observability and automation within the VCC ecosystem.
- Successful completion of the Nlets fingerprinting background assessment.
- Must be located in Phoenix, Arizona and will to work a hybrid model.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Networking, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of 5–7 years of experience in network engineering, network operations, or infrastructure support in a high-availability environment.
- Certifications (Preferred): CCNA, Fortinet NSE, CompTIA Network+, or equivalent.
- Strong proficiency in Python, Java, C++, PowerShell, and other scripting languages for automation, with hands-on experience in GitHub-based development workflows.
- Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, routing, switching, VPN, VLAN, and firewall technologies.
- Preferred experience with Cradlepoint devices and NetCloud Manager (NCM).
- Experience with SNMP-based network monitoring platforms (WUG, SolarWinds, LogicMonitor, etc.).
- Proficiency in scripting and automation (Python, PowerShell, Bash, or similar).
- Familiarity with cloud and hybrid networking (Azure, AWS, or GCP).
- Understanding of network security best practices, including segmentation, access control, and logging.
- Experience with ServiceNow or similar ticketing and workflow systems is a plus.
- Advanced skills with Microsoft Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), with preferred experience in Power BI, Visio, and Outlook.
- Agile/Scrum certification (Scrum Master, Product Owner, or Scrum Fundamentals) is preferred.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and decision-making skills with the ability to work in a fast-paced, 24x7x365 environment.
